KC Media Watch Alert #21 -
The Downing Street Memo and the Kansas City
Star
Friends,
The so-called Downing Street or Smoking Gun Memo
(see
www.afterdowningstreet.org for full story), was leaked to the
British press in early May. It was roughly a month later that it
trickled into the American press. While the Kansas City Star
did print Mollie Ivins' column on this, and coverage of the Conyers
hearing did make page A2, the Star has never published the
actual memo, nor the subsequent legal background memo which was
leaked (http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/downloads/fcolegal020308.pdf)
nor the David Manning Memo (http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/downloads/manning020314.pdf). As
a result, Kansas Citians who depend on the Star as their main
source of news have thus far been insulated from these documents and
their weighty implications.
It is up to us to help steer the Star and
the rest of the media in the right direction. We have a few courses
of action for you to follow:ACTION -
-
Contact Derek Donovan, Kansas City Star Readers'
Representative, by either calling him at 816 234 4487 between
8:30 and noon weekdays or emailing him at
readerrep@kcstar.com, and tell him that you would like your
fellow Kansas City Star readers to have access to the memo.
If you email him, please bcc
kcmediawatch@yahoo.com. As always please be polite and
respectful.
-
Come to the Citizens for Media Reform Weekly
Turnup! Wednesday, June 29, 2005, 12:00 Noon Northeast corner
of 18th and Grand (The Kansas City Star Office Building). The KC
Star has been somewhat lacking in its reporting on the issues
raised by the Downing Street Memos and the growing outcry from
members of Congress and American citizens for the administration
to address the discrepancies between their statements and the
information revealed in the memos.
This purpose of this event is to urge the Star to fully
inform the Kansas City community of what we believe to be a
pressing national issue. A strong turnout will send a strong
message.
-
And if you have not yet submitted the MEDIA
ACTION PAGE on the Downing Street minutes, our one click form
now also sends your personal message to the Ombudsmen for the
New York Times, the Washington Post, and 7 of the most important
TV network news programs. They still are not giving this
scandal the coverage it warrants so let's all demand it.

Thanks as always for all you do in pursuit of truth
and peace,
Mike Murphy
