Alert # 2: Stop Media Conglomeration...

Dear KC Media Watch Subscribers:
This is an alert about a crucial issue--and a very simple action!   You may already have responded to it via other sources.  If so, thank you!  If not--keep reading!
We all know how frustrated we are from time to time with the Kansas City Star, local radio and local TV.  Now, imagine if all those sources were owned by the same company!  Conscientious reporting and balanced coverage, essential to the good information that powers an effective democracy, would be even more maligned by lack of competition and cutbacks than they are now.  But this nightmare is exactly what's threatened by the FCC.
Read the alert below, courtesy of MoveOn.org, for a brief description of the problem.  Then just follow the internet links to take the quick and easy action.

THE PROBLEM

On June 2, the Federal Communications Commission is planning on authorizing sweeping changes to the American news media. The rule changes could allow your local TV stations, newspaper, radio stations, and cable provider to all be owned by one company. NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox could have the same corporate parent. The resulting concentration of ownership could be deeply destructive to our democracy.

When we talk to Congresspeople about this issue, their response is usually the same: "We only hear from media lobbyists on this. It seems like my constituents aren't very concerned with this issue." A few thousand emails could permanently change that perception.

TAKE ACTION

  1. Please join MoveOn at http://www.moveon.org/stopthefcc/  in asking Congress and the FCC to fight media deregulation.

  2. You can also contribute to run TV and print ads at http://www.moveon.org/monopoly/  highlighting the problems with media deregulation.  Several Kansas Citians have already contributed to these ads!
  3. Let KC Media Watch know what actions you've taken.  Just drop an e-mail to kcmediawatch@yahoo.com

Thanks!
